1.1 Overview of PVC Rooftiles

PVC roof tiles are a modern roofing material, which have been proven to be a popular alternative to traditional concrete and clay tiles. Practical, economic, durable, and environmentally-friendly, they have been increasingly used as a preferred roof tile for a wide range of buildings. Produced from a formulation of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and a number of other additives, PVC roof tiles can emulate the appearance of almost any traditional material and sometimes have added texture to further improve their resemblance to traditional tiles. A key merit of PVC roof tiles is their long life and durability when compared to traditional materials. They are UV resistant and so will look the same for years. They are also very resistant to breakage; testing has shown a tile to still be fully intact and functional after it has been impact tested. In part due to its rigidity and also its flexibility, PVC can be recycled. This provides an environmental incentive to always recycle old tiles into new ones as the tiles are still fully functional as a roof tile but are at the end of their life on a roof. This cannot always be said for traditional materials, which can’t be feasibly recycled into more roof tiles and so must be disposed of in landfills.
